I watch this movie once every year, that's how important it is to me. I'm on my 15th watch now. I've seen the shawshank redemption upwards of 10 times and never get tired of it. Tim robbins delivers his best preformance as well as morgan freeman. The two play prison inmates who become friends and devise a plan to escape. After that alot of sad things happen to them rape, beatings, solitary confinement, etc. Morgan Freemans character is released while Tim Robbins succesfully escapes after bringing down the corupt warden and head guard. The acting is superb as well as every other aspect in the film. I highly recomend this film to any avid movie buff like myself.
8/10. The cast is superb. A real chemistry seems to bond Robbins, Freeman, and their inner circle. Will Sadler, the stone-faced bad guy in Die Hard 2, steals several scenes as the country-loving Heywood, and Vancouver native Gil Bellows shines as Tommy, the cocky high-school drop-out whose fate is pretty much sealed once we're told he has a wife and baby son waiting for him outside the prison walls. Brown, with his hair trimmed so neatly he's this close to being a dead ringer for Al Gore, displays an obsessive brutality that his Highlander role never hinted at. Freeman delivers a subtle but potent performance, letting just the teeniest dabs of despair leak through the cracks of his easy- going facade. Robbins brings the perfect mixture of fresh-faced bewilderment and canny deceit to his role as Dufresne, handling the dramatic and comic elements with equal ease. Watching these actors work together is a real treat, and they more than make up for the script's deficiencies.

Having been to prison myself, here's my thoughts on the fat guy. One, I firmly believe he was either a case of mistaken identity through a lineup, or he unwittingly took the fall for someone else, got framed, etc. based on his insistence that there was a mistake, he's not supposed to be there, not me, etc. I mean sure Red had the running joke with everybody that they were all innocent, but you get the feeling with the fat guy that he legit got railroaded in some form. In my experience it's extremely rare that such a spineless blubbering amoeba would go out and commit crimes in the first place - someone like that would just be too scared of getting caught. Two, Hadley almost did him a favor here. If he had lived through that beating and not been crippled, his experience in prison would have been a nightmare. He would probably be targeted by the Sisters and further, because he probably wouldn't even stand up for himself like Andy did, he would be extorted. Whatever money he had on his books, he would be made to pay rent. And if it wasn't enough, well, his family had better cough it up. Long story short is his existence would have been so fucking miserable that he would kill himself. Or, he would be dumb enough to snitch on the people giving him a hard time and he would be killed.

I just notice something after rewatching the lord of the flies all 3 movies, but Frodo just carries a ring and doesn't do much besides be in danger and having the others to save doesn't even bring nothing to the table, he only save smeagol and doesn't even tell smeagol why he lured into a tap in the second movie and this one. sam is real hero, he saved Frodo more than onces. and you can see his passion for help Frodo, hes not getting paid or anything like that. he really wanted to help Frodo bc he really cares about him. now of days. you don't seeing anybody on real life, people help to get something out of it. but when I was younger and living in the 90s. you could see a lot especially in children to be a good friend.

Quite simply amazing.
This film makes you question yourself, authority, friendship and injustice all at once. The quality of the acting is brilliant, and what a storyline. Although set in the past it is a storyline that could run for centuries. I have watched this film probably 10-15 times and each time enjoy it as much as the last. An easy watch, and although far fetched is still believable somewhat.
Absolute entertainment from start to finish, and on a relatively low budget. It just shows that a simple idea for a screenplay can be adapted into a classic. Many films fail when they make twists too complicated, or use too many special effects. This film allows the viewer to make their own decisions but also gently pushes you into making a connection with each and every character

That bit with the Friends song is just too much. I like that in a way, this scene comes full circle. Hadley beats a prisoner for sobbing controllably from fear, then years later he himself gets his comuppence and is imprisoned/ executed, and like the poor guy he beat to death, finally feels the same fear, sobbing uncontrollably as Red mentions.
